Analysis of an article from The Metro Herald, 11/2 [WK2, SEMESTER2]

This article is a very good example of good court reportage as the journalist, Con Doherty, managed to successfully encapsulate and synopsize the trial of a man in question over drug offenses. The trial was reported in an almost story-like manner, free from judicial or law related jargon, making it quite an interesting yet informational read.

The man in question, Derek Managan's details are not protected under law and so are included in the report. His details are not protected as he is an adult and has actually been found guilty of the crime. Not only is his name and age outlined in the article but his address is too.

This may be because there are other 27 year olds named Derek Managan in Dublin who are at risk of having the crime attributed to them because of this article if very specific specifications weren't included. Because of this, in many cases, headshots of the defendant outside of the court (as it's against the law to take photos inside) are included alongside the article in order to avoid confusion.

Doherty was rational in his copy and didn't jump to any conclusions, deciding to include that the offender was a 'non-smoker'(although in quotation marks), even though the jury begged to differ, in order to show that he was on no one's side and was merely an objective spectator of the trial.
